Golden Dawn MPs attend the opening of the new season at parliament on October 7 (AFP) Golden Dawn MPs attend the opening of the new season at parliament on October 7 (AFP) MPs on Wednesday decided to lift the parliamentary immunity of six deputies of the neonazi Golden Dawn party, paving the way for their prosecution for organising and involvement in a criminal gang and other offences.

The motions to strip the MPs of the protection that MPs enjoy from prosecution was supported by between 246 and 247 MPs in a number of votes.

The six MPs and their constituencies are: Stathis Boukouras (Corinthia), Yiorgos Germenis (Outer Athens), Ilias Kasidiaris (Attica), Ilias Panagiotaros (Outer Athens), Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos (Larisa) and Panagiotis Iliopoulos (Magnisia).

Investigating magistrates had requested the lifting of immunity for Boukouras, Germenis and Iliopoulos over their suspected involvement in a criminal organisation, while the lifting of the immunity of the others relates to older criminal cases.

The move follows a crackdown on the party in the aftermath of the murder, by a self-confessed Golden Dawn supporter, of hip-hop artist Pavlos Fyssas last month.

Kasidiaris, who spoke during the debate, accused the government of acting on the orders of the European Union and the US.
