Five-fold rise in Greek specialist doctors emigrating

Some 1,166 medical specialists have left Greece in the last five years

There has been a five-fold increase in the number of specialised doctors who have emigrated from Greece over the last five years, according to the Athens Medical Association. According to the association, some 642 unspecialised and 1,166 specialised Greek doctors went to work abroad last year, compared to respective figures of 243 and 292 in 2007.

The number of specialist doctors who have left Greece to look for work abroad has increased five-fold over the past five years, according to the Athens Medical Association (AMA).

According to the association, some 642 unspecialised and 1,166 specialised Greek doctors went to work abroad last year, compared to respective figures of 243 and 292 in 2007.

Indeed, the trend of migrating doctors in the first three months of this year was 2.5 times greater than the equivalent period last year.

The alarming figures – particularly relating to the departure of highly specialised doctors – came to light among the findings during a three-day event organised by AMA's information and employment department looking into European programmes and work possibilities in Germany.

One particular talk by the German labour ministry's central personnel service was attended by 270 Greek doctors – 70 of them unemployed.
