A 13-year-old girl has died as the result of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, after inhaling fumes from a brazier in her home.

The girl, a Serbian national, lived with her unemployed 54-year-old mother in the Xirokrini district, in the northern city of Thessaloniki, in a home without electricity or other forms of heating.

It is believed that the mother fainted at around 10pm on Sunday evening. When she came around, the noticed that her daughter had also lost consciousness.

Attempts by an ambulance crew, which arrived at apartment shortly after 11pm, to resuscitate the girl were unsuccessful. A coroner who attended the scene found that she had died from inhaling poisonous fumes.

Police arrested the mother, but she was released on Monday morning. A file is being prepared against her.

Thousands of people in Greece have been left without electricity in the homes, unable to pay their power bills. Increasing taxation has also left heating oil out of reach for a large part of the population.

Flooding

In an unrelated incident, another Serbian national drowned in her basement apartment in Peloponnesian city of Argos, which experienced severe flooding on the night from Sunday to Monday.

The body of the woman, who was in her mid-50s, was discovered at 6am on Monday after her home was pumped out by the emergency services.

She had been living in the city for many years.

Speaking to Mega TV, the regional fire chief said that the woman's flat flooded when a wall burst due to the deluge of water outside, which Argos' mayor Dimitris Kamposos compared to a "river that fell from the sky".

Flooding has also been reported in villages around Argos, namely Nea Kios, Skafidaki and Kefalari and on the old national highway from Tripoli to Argos between Myloi and Argos.

The fire service was also called out in other parts of Peloponnese, such as Kyparisia, Corinth and Kiato.
