Golden Dawn MP's gun goes off at Athens airport

Antonis Gregos' weapon fires as it is being emptied ahead of flight to Thessaloniki

Golden Dawn MP Antonis Gregos' gun goes off at an Aegean Airlines counter before a flight to Thessaloniki. He claims the gun was in the hands of an airline official when it fired into the ground

Golden Dawn MP Antonis Gregos, from his website Golden Dawn MP Antonis Gregos, from his website A Golden Dawn MP's gun went off at an Aegean Airlines counter on Thursday afternoon, officials at Athens International Airport have said.

The incident, which will intensify concerns surrounding Golden Dawn members of parliament who carry firearms, occurred as the Thessaloniki MP prepared to catch a flight to his constituency.

Antonis Gregos' gun fired at 2.50pm as it was being emptied at an Aegean Airlines counter.

According to the MP, who is among a number of Gold Dawn MP's who carries a licensed firearm, it was being handled by an official when it fired into the ground, without causing injuries.

The MP subsequently boarded flight AA510 to Thessaloniki.

Airline regulations state that licensed firearms must first made safe, then emptied of ammunition and sealed in an envelope before being handed to the pilot.

They are then returned to the owner when the aircraft has reached its destination.

A number of members of parliament from other parties have warned of the danger of Golden Dawn MPs carrying guns.

Earlier this month a parking attendant told Golden Dawn MP Panayiotis Iliopoulos to put away his gun as he drove into parliament.

The MP, whose weapon was resting on the passenger seat, reportedly told the attendant: "I prefer to get someone first, before they get me" before driving on.

And, in the run-up to Orthodox Easter, Giorgos Germenis – another a member of Golden Dawn – apparently reached for his gun while being restrained by Athens Mayor Yiorgos Kaminis' bodyguards.

The mayor has filed a suit against Germenis for allegedly assaulting him after he asked police to stop a pre-Easter Greeks-only food handout by the extreme right party on Syntagma Square.

Around the same time, an Australian TV documentary showed another Golden Dawn MP, Ilias Panayiotaros, turning up for what he claimed was a Greeks-only blood donation drive in a Smart car, with a handgun visable in his trousers pocket
