Santorini left powerless

Flights not affected

A blackout caused by a fire at the island's power station has left Santorini and its neighbouring Thirasia without power

Santorini (Reuters) Santorini (Reuters) A blackout has left the island of Santorini and its neighbouring Thirasia without power since Tuesday afternoon.

Flights to and from the island have not been affected as the airport has its own generators.

The blackout was caused by a fire that broke out at Santorini's power station, which supplies both islands with electricity.

According to the Public Power Corporation, the fire has been put out and power will be gradually restored as soon as possible.

Local authorities said the Greek navy would ship generators to the island by early Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday it became known that this year Santorini will receive a record number of tourists, which is expected to exceed 2011's 1.9m visitors.
