Five homes rendered uninhabitable in Metsovo

File photo File photo Five homes have been rendered uninhabitable and a further 25 seriously damaged as a result of landslides in the last fortnight in the northeastern prefecture of Metsovo, in Epirus.

Local authorities and scientists from the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) have been on the alert to tackle the problem in the villages of Metsovo and Anilio, which has been caused by heavy rainfall.

Local roads have also been affected in the area, which is located in the Pindus mountains.

Metsovo's mayor, Nikos Tsompikos, said the area required "serious financial help, which only the state can provide".
