Inspired into Chasing Athens

New novel looks at lessons about life and love that come from living in a foreign culture

The beauty within Greece's culture, people and traditions and the unexpected turns caused by the crisis are the extremes that inspired me to write my debut novel, a romantic comedy/contemporary romance called Chasing Athens

Mediterranean living, the unique urban rhythm of Athens and the serene beauty of the Greek islands helped me realise just how much a place can influence, change and inspire. As an expat living in Greece, I discovered so much beauty within Greece's culture, people and traditions. However, in a time of crisis, life can't help but take unexpected turns among uncertainty and desperation. As a woman living abroad, all of these extremes surrounded me and pulled together creating an experience that inspired me to write my debut romantic comedy/contemporary romance novel, Chasing Athens.

Chasing Athens takes readers through a modern day journey in Greece as told through the eyes of 30-year-old Ava Martin. She's a heartbroken American expat living in Athens who is suddenly forced to define her newfound independence after her husband walks out on her. She finds herself wondering where she truly belongs and because Greece is a place of contrasts the decision isn't that easy to make. What she experiences, as she is immersed in a foreign culture, offer her lessons about life and love. They become lessons she couldn't learn anywhere else in the world. With her Greek friends, Ava laughs and learns while facing culture shock, language barriers and the charm of Mediterranean men, until a life-threatening emergency back home in sleepy Ithaca, New York, forces her to confront her disappointing past, and forces her to redefine the meaning of home.

The observations I've made living as an expat played a huge role in creating and describing Ava's world. The feeling of belonging to a place, as a foreigner, can be an unexpected surprise. When we live abroad, out of all sorts of comfort zones, we learn so many things about ourselves that would have never been uncovered.

The sheer beauty of the Greece weaves itself throughout the novel as well. Scenes take place in the quaint and picturesque Saronic island of Hydra and the cosmopolitan Cycladic island of Mykonos. For the most part Chasing Athens is a novel that offers a unique contemporary perspective of expat life in the bustling capital of Greece. I hope readers will relate to the humorous, touching and cultural journey that Ava unexpectedly finds herself on. It's a journey where Greece plays a key role, setting the stage to help her to find the courage to grow, change and move on.
