(File photo) (File photo) Police on Crete say they have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of fatally stabbing a fellow Briton during a brawl in the party resort of Malia in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The victim, who was also 19, died after he was struck in the chest with a sharp object, believed to be a knife, police said in a statement.

He was found outside a closed bar on a pedestrian street at around 3am, police told AFP. An ambulance was called and the man died of his injuries on route to hospital, police said.

Police say 30 people - all British nationals - were involved in the melee.

According to the CretaLive.gr news site, the suspect was arrested at noon. He had failed to return to his hotel during the night, but police are believed to have found blood-stained clothing and his passport in his room.

Police say they arrested 17 others suspected of involvement in the fight and are searching for the remaining participants.

Police say 30 people - all British nationals - were involved in the melee. Locals interviewed by CretaLive say that the Britons were continuing a dispute that had emerged on Sunday night, with some suggesting that the disagreement had originated in the UK.

Popular with British tourists, Malia is renowned for its wild nightlife. Locals, however, claim that the town and police have worked hard to improve the town’s image in recent years, an effort that was beginning to show results.
