The court said Kostas Sakkas, 29, who is facing terrorism-related charges, could be released on bail of €30,000.

He is obliged to remain within the Attica region and must report regularly to his local police station.

A student, Sakkas began his hunger strike on June 4, 2½ years to the day since his arrest.

On Wednesday, a doctor monitoring Sakkas' health said he is at the "final stage" of life and appealed to the government to secure his release.

Sakkas was arrested in December 2010 but has been held in prison in pretrial detention for longer than the 18-month limit allowed by the constitution.

He is accused of being a member of the militant anarchist group Fire Cells Conspiracy, or SPF, which has carried out multiple fire-bombings in Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as a 2010 parcel bombing campaign that targeted foreign embassies and the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Sakkas denies the charges and that he is a member of SPF.

Meanwhile, the police have said they have launched an administrative inquiry into an incident on Wednesday in which citizens say they were attacked by officers while staging a peaceful protest calling for Sakkas' release.

In video recordings uploaded to the internet, members from the Dias motorcycle unit can be seen beating protesters while they sat on the ground.

The protest took place near the Acropolis and the scenes were witnessed by passing tourists.
